Eine fantastische Liveaufnahme. fast schon mit dem kompletten neuen Quintett - nur mit dem blendend aufgelegten George Coleman am Saxophon. Hier sind mehrere Kandidaten für ein Topranking in der Umfrage dabei, insbesondere die tolle Version des Titelstücks. das das Album eröffnet. Gruß am @atom, der das Album gerade in Jazzfaden besprochen hat.
Das komplementäre Album mit den Uptempo-Stücken besitze ich jedoch nicht.

Miles Davis - E.S.P. (Columbia, rel. und rec. 1965) **** 1/2
Nun zum ersten Mail mit Wayne Shorter im Studio. Fast wirkt es so, als müssten sich alle erstmal neu beweisen. Oft rasante Tempi, Breaks, alle Musiker in Bestform. Lieblingstracks "Eighty-One" und das expressive Spiel von Miles auf "Mood". Ein Album, das ich insgesamt aber eher bewundere als liebe. (Kurze Anmerkung zur Beziehungsidylle auf dem Cover - Frances hat in kurz darauf verlassen, er hat sie regelmäßig verprügelt und die Beziehung war hier bereits am Ende - trotzdem dieses Foto?).

Eigentlich müsste hier jetzt "The Complete Plugged Nickel Live" von 1965 folgen - diese Box ist aber noch meine große Lücke in der Miles Davis-Sammlung.

Nun schon ein für mich viel harmonischer wirkendes Quintett, das sich auch mal Zeit nimmt und zur Ruhe kommt. Man hat sich untereinander beweisen und kann sich auch mal zurücknehmen. Toll "Circle" und der zukünftige Wayne Shorter-Klassiker "Footprints".
